Sara MacIVer
After graduating, I worked as a graphic designer (packaging design etc) and then as a printmaker, spending time using the excellent Print Workshop at Gainsborough House, Sudbury. However, I now generally work in a variety of mediums and I am presently enjoying collage.
My work has sold successfully at various exhibitions in Suffolk, and most recently in Norwich. If you see anything of interest, please do get in touch. Either by email or DM on Instagram.
Collage
Working from my barn studio, I use either hand painted papers or small scraps from brochures, if appropriate, or maybe even my own torn mono prints, whatever works! I create abstracted landscapes, either real or imagined. I then add either oil pastels or charcoal to these works.
Oil painting
Having always loved a loose impressionistic approach to painting, with its departure from realism & its concentration on light and atmosphere, it is natural for me to apply this approach to my oil painting. Subjects range from domestic scenes, to seascapes, to light catching a cottage in the Suffolk countryside. I do, sometimes, venture into abstraction, taking the 'essence' of the subject. I normally have an idea of what to paint. Using sketches or photographic reference, the subject gradually materialises on the canvas using a number of marks to convey the details. I implement an intuitive approach that is based on, but not a direct representation, of my chosen subject.
Watercolours
My watercolours are now, in turn, being influenced by my use of oils, and I continue to use the loose style developed several years ago during my experience as a packaging designer, but introducing a slight abstract approach, letting the paint take its own course and surprise me!
Printmaking
My prints were hand printed at Gainsborough House and printmaking is something I am sure I will return to again and again. I particularly enjoyed lino printing and felt I should specialise in one form of printmaking so that I could develop it as a skill.
